Blog to Lose

No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!

Today's realizations:

Part 1: BY GOLLY SHE LIKES IT

I was in the shower and running through the mental checklist of things to do tomorrow (why must my to-do list invade my "me" time?) I'm going to the gym at 8 AM tomorrow morning to do the scheduled workout (3 miles and strength training). My thoughts did turn to "ah man, I'd rather sleep," I'd be lying if I didn't say that crossed my mind. But before I could fully process those thoughts my mind jumped to how I want to see if I can pull out a 1.4 mile consecutive jog (up my best by .2). I realized...I'm starting to crave the feeling of pushing myself to do one more lap at the gym. Yea, it's hard, but walking off that track afterwards is SO worth it! I dare say I like this running thing!

Part 2: Biology is amazing!

Last week I put in a 3.4 mile run/walk. The next day I felt sore ALL day and barely got through my 2.5 mile run/walk. I ended up skipping my scheduled workouts over the weekend (a 3 mile run/walk and 30 minutes of cross training). Monday meant getting back on schedule. Translation: a 4.4 mile run/walk. Surprisingly, I only felt a little bit of tightness in my hamstrings today and nothing else! My body recovered MUCH faster from an even longer run. I did get in some great stretching (gentle stretching of course so as not to strain) with a 20 minute yoga DVD. We (fellow half marathon trainee) were scheduled to either stretch/strengthen or rest today, our pick. The yoga was fairly relaxing, though it really does get to your arms after awhile (damn you downward dog!!!). Anyway, it was interesting to see how much quicker my body seemed to bounce back after a long run. Maybe after 2 months of kinda/sorta running and a week of REAL running training my body is getting the hang of it???

Part 3: My dad is the sweetest person around

I came home and there was a package on my doorstep. My dad ordered me THREE books on taking up running and half marathons. He's paranoid that I'll injure myself, but I know he's also very proud. Neither of my parents took weight off without surgery and neither has ever been a distance runner (though they do walk 5Ks together now...it's really cute). I just thought it was sweet that within one week of telling him I wanted to do this he ordered me three books to coach me through. :-)

Part 4: Lentils are tasty!

GREAT dinner tonight. Threw lentils in the crockpot with onion, celery, carrots, bell pepper, tomatoes, garlic, chicken broth. and spices. Nutrition info said 243 calories for 1/8 of the recipe, though I don't think I ate a whole serving. I paired it with green salad with about 1.5 T yogurt ranch dressing (so 50ish calories) and 2 RF crescent rolls (180 calories). Also had about 1/4 cup shredded cheese. Whole mean was probably around 500-550 calories and VERY filling. And I have leftovers! :-)

That's all for tonight, hope everyone is doing well!

Lentils are DELICIOUS, I love them lots and they are my go to food when I want easy meals. You can do a half marathon, I ran my first one this year. When it comes down to it the best advice I got is less is more, get in 3-4 runs a week and if you feel an injury coming on stop and cross train.

Thanks for the comments! (especially the heads up about the lentils, haha!) I'm tracking all my vitamins/minerals on nutritiondata (along with calories) so I'll make sure to keep an eye to make sure I'm within my normal range and don't shock my body. :-)

You go girl! I'm like you - sometimes I let it cross my mind "What if I just skipped the gym today..". I have to stop those thoughts really fast, so that I move on and actually make myself go. I'm always glad afterwards that I went, and lots of days I end up pushing myself a little further than planned.
Your Dad sounds so supportive! You are very lucky. BTW watch out for the lentils. They are high in iron and can "back you up" if you eat them a few days in a row....but yes they are delish!
