struggling

So I had this great plan to get back on track with exercise by committing to being active each day, even if it was just a short walk or some weights. I did fine with it initially.

Then school got busy. And I got busy at work. And my commitment to exercise started to slide. Instead of making it a priority, it only happened if I had time left over in the evenings. And if I did, I was often too tired by that point to actually do anything.

I'm just having such a hard time getting back into the rou… Continue

time to get back on track

I've fallen off the workout wagon, majorly.

Not to make excuses, but a lot of it had to do with getting sick. I was feeling completely well for nearly a month. First I had the flu - fever, sore throat and exhaustion is no fun. A week and a half to two weeks later, I was on the way to recovery and actually felt well enough to work out the one day. Then I developed this awful cough. That lasted almost a week and a half. I was congested, meaning working out was nearly out of the question. I mean,… Continue

I finally went running again

After running my 5K on October 4th, I got away from running for a bit. After the race, school got busy and the weather got crappy (rain, rain, rain) so I just wasn't motivated to run.

And then, a week and a half later, I got sick. After my roommate got sick, he started comparing his symptoms to those of swine flu. He had a lot of the symptoms. Out of curiosity, I compared mine too. Fever? I didn't have a thermometer to check, but it sure felt like it - I felt freezing but my roommates all said… Continue

one thing after another

In my last blog post I wrote about the lack of working out that's been going on. Since then I've gone out walking a few times, for about 40 minutes and I walked to and from school (about an hour total), so I haven't been completely sedentary. And I had every intention of going for a run on Tuesday evening. But the weather was bad. And then last night I had to go to campus at 7pm to work on a presentation with my partner. We had to wait so long to get together since he was at away game for soccer… Continue

sometimes I worry too much

Since my 5K on Sunday, I haven't really been keeping up with my workouts. I walked to and from school on Wednesday, which adds up to an hour of walking, but aside from short 5-10 minute walks a couple other times this week and doing another day of the 100 Push Up Challenge, I haven't really worked out.

I was really stressed out about it, but the scale remained consistent when I weighed in daily. If it was up at all I knew it was because I hadn't had enough water (I almost never get enough in wh… Continue

Total Lost: 43.5 lbs

Profile Information

About Me:
I was an average, healthy kid for most of my life, but that changed in my senior year of high school when I gained 30-40 pounds. It came down to struggling with depression, not being active and eating the wrong kinds of foods. I denied there was a problem for a while, as I just didn't feel as big as I really was. When my mind caught up to the reality, it was a big shock and my self-esteem took a big hit.

I finally decided I had to do something in June 2008. I made small changes at first, swapping out unhealthy dinners for lean protein (fish or chicken usually) and vegetables. In about three months, I'd lost 10 pounds just from that one simple change. Sometimes the small changes really do add up!

From there, I made more changes. I started exercising regularly by going for walks, lifting weights and using an elliptical trainer. By December 2008, I'd lost 20 pounds and people noticed.

I joined Blog To Lose in late January 2009. Aside from starting my weight loss journey, I would consider it the best thing I could have done for my weight loss. The support is amazing and I had so much encouragement and helpful tips from people who were struggling with the same things as me.

In March 2009, I started running, though not on a regular basis. A couple months later, I got a treadmill and started running regularly. My longest distance to date is 4 miles and I'm gearing up for a 5K fundraising run in October.

In May 2009, I hit my goal of 135 pounds (I'm 5'3"), a weight I hadn't been since grade 11, after starting at 173 pounds. Since then I've focused on maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle and it's resulted in gradually losing another 5 pounds. Since I'm a goal-oriented person, I've now set a goal of improving my fitness through running and finding ways to maintain balance in all the areas of my life!

Very good point about diet food versus healthy food for your body! This is something I still struggle with, such as choosing artifically sweetened low cal yogurt or the real stuff....oh the choices we have to make on this journey! :)

Thanks Valerie! Miranda does eat beans I prefer it, not only for the price but also because it isn't processed like the fake stuff, but she does eat her share of that too. I make huge batches of beans & freeze them in canning jars. I make hummus weekly & re-fried beans too. My little one Olivia doesn't prefer beans but loves hummus!!! It just takes more brain power to try to come up with something we all will enjoy.

Hey how's it going? Thought I would drop by and ask how your initial test went for the challenge like you said I could this weekend lol. I just finished the exhaustion test that you do after completing week two and I did 40 push ups!!!!! So insane how this program really works!

Lol, yep, Ricki's! I never got the pants, a little too rich for me right now, but the sale is a great one I love it when all you have to do is try on a pair of pants or a blouse just to get a few dollars off when you're already there to get something.

Glad to hear you're joining those of us around here doing the challenge. I know of a couple who are trying it. Hope your knee feels better soon. Even when the bruise heels I would recommend using a pillow for your knees, easier on the joint. I do my push ups on the living room floor which is carpet but I stick a throw pillow under my knees anyways just to make it easier on myself.

You should join us for the challenge!! It's a really great plan to follow and see great improvement over a not so long period of time (6 weeks). The great thing about it is that even though it seems like it's a huge number of push ups to do they gradually get you into it. You take an initial test to see where you need to start and they slowly build up your strength. I'm actually doing "alternative/girl" push ups for the 6 week program and then I plan to start all over doing regular push ups to see if I can make it to 100 consecutive regular push ups by the end of the year! Crazy goal I know seeing as how I can't even manage ONE right now but you can do anything that you put your mind to!

Latest Activity

These changes sound like a great way to get back into your groove. I have been feeling in a funk lately too, but I made a plan yesterday and just having that plan made me feel so much better.

Congrats on graduating - that is awesome! You will get back in the groove with exercise. At least you are getting in some activity. Maybe try a new class or something you have never done before to get you excited. It will happen!

Congratulations on GRADUATING!!! WOOHOOO!!! It is so tough to find that balance. Just last night I was sitting in my car in the gym parking lot crying to my husband b/c I had a hard day at work (great day, but I've put in like three 12 hour days in…

I agree with Maren - it really is a mental thing. I used to hit a wall before I ever got to 5K and it took a lot mentally to get past that. I was physically able to do it, I just didn't think I could. It is a lot about believing that you can do it.…

I initially set a goal that was within a healthy BMI range for me mainly because I really didn't know what was an appropriate weight for me. While I think it can be a helpful guideline, especially if you don't remember how much you weighed at an ear…
