About Me:
Graduate student attempting to embrace a healthier lifestyle. Both my parents were overweight growing up and both opted for gastric bypass. The surgery was an extreme success for my mother, but I've seen my father erase most of his weight loss through his continued unhealthy eating. I realize my approach to eating needs to be completely altered- growing up I just wasn't exposed to the idea of portion control or the idea that dessert isn't a necessity. After seeing what my parents have been though, I've decided to try to change my habits for the better.

I lost about 10 pounds after my college graduation and then stalled around 225 for several months. I then joined WW in January 2009 and proceeded to drop another 15 pounds before I completely lost motivation. I gained about 5-7 pounds back and fluctuated around 215 for the summer months. I'm now back on the wagon after something in my head just clicked. I'm more determined than ever. I've decided to just track calories and focus on unprocessed foods as much as possible.

NEW UPDATE: I'm running a half marathon in May! So this will also be a blog of a non-runner becoming a long distance MACHINE!

Just a quick check-in

Disneyland went smoothly. On day one I did give in and have a monte cristo sandwich, but with the walking I did during the day and lack of snacking, I'm pretty sure I was fine on calories. Instead of a larger dinner I just had a bowl of chicken tortilla soup and an apple. The second day was pretty successful as well. I'm happy with how it went. The only bad parts of the day included getting slammed with strollers (seriously, who lets their kids under 10 push the stroller through a VERY crowded t… Continue

Off to Disneyland!

Not much to post....I'm heading off to LA for a couple days to visit my sister and go to Disneyland with her (I'm a little obsessed with all things Disney, haha)

Eating is *gradually* getting better. Breakfast was some cereal and my lunch was a sweet potato. I'm a little low on protein, but we're having a chicken and veggie stir fry for dinner. All in all I should be OK on calories for the day...little high, but MUCH better than where I've been.

I didn't run the past two days...my asthma has r… Continue

Yes, I am still alive!

Just a quick note since I haven't posted in so long (a week, yikes!).

I'm home in California, school is out until Mid-January, and my eating has been well...horrible. It certainly isn't horrible by my former standards, but certainly not within my calorie range. A BIG part of it was the end of semester crazies combined with holiday food EVERYWHERE and then, to ice the cake, my computer had to go in for repairs. I do ALL my tracking online, mainly because I often need to construct recipes or sear… Continue

The day I became a human garbage disposal

Today...eating...so. bad.

It just snowballed all day long. I wasn't bingeing...just mindless snacking and at the end of the day I'm sure I was WAY over my calories. I think there were a couple factor contributing:

1) I didn't get enough sleep last night so my body was sending my brain signals to eat to stay energized.

2) My calorie deficit yesterday was around 1,300...that's 300 more than what's recommended for a 2 pound loss per week. In other words, I wasn't getting enough nutrition.

3) Fi… Continue

Holy (skinny) Cow!!! FIVE MILES?!?!?!

Today was our long run of the week....5 miles. Up until now, I've only jogged 3.5-3.6 without walk breaks. My goal today was 4 miles. Bless my running partner to high heaven....she convinced me (and so did a really nice and unexpected bit of self-determination) that I could keep going.

I DID! I JOGGED 5 MILES!!! We stopped at the 2 mile, 3 mile, and 4 miles marks for sips of water, but other than that...I jogged the ENTIRE thing (12 min pace). We also did some walking to warm-up and cool down f… Continue

I've always felt that my family was not a family that could run either, I saw on your page that your are training for a half marathon, that is awesome! My sister and I decided last night that we are going to do a 10 mile run this spring, I feel good about making that committment...time to get my running shoes on!

Amanda, Thank you soo much for the comment! Just like you, I LOVE going grocery shopping when I get home. My mom is an amazing chef so she normally has wonderful choices around the house (healthy for the most part) but after reading so many health blogs throughout the week, I come up with ideas that I can't wait to try when I have a stocked kitchen at hand. This is definitely going to be a pretty indulgent few days with different parties and get-togethers almost every night, so I will have to keep blogging to stay on track. Thanks for the encouragement! Have a wonderful holiday:)

Bloomington? My boyfriend goes to IUS and his sister to the main campus in Bloomington. A small world indeed! I'm originally from Texas, moved here about 4 months ago.

Yeah, it is defnitely nice to relate both in age and in a new lifestyle change! You are doing a wonderful job joining a marathon. I want to start running soon. I go for about a 45 minute walk, but I want to build up into running. Do you run on the treadmill, or?

Hi Amanda. Thanks for the comment and in the interest of full disclosure I have to admit that I do the workouts at home so I don't really need to get out the door. Just out the bed. LOL.
