About Me:
Graduate student attempting to embrace a healthier lifestyle. Both my parents were overweight growing up and both opted for gastric bypass. The surgery was an extreme success for my mother, but I've seen my father erase most of his weight loss through his continued unhealthy eating. I realize my approach to eating needs to be completely altered- growing up I just wasn't exposed to the idea of portion control or the idea that dessert isn't a necessity. After seeing what my parents have been though, I've decided to try to change my habits for the better.

I lost about 10 pounds after my college graduation and then stalled around 225 for several months. I then joined WW in January 2009 and proceeded to drop another 15 pounds before I completely lost motivation. I gained about 5-7 pounds back and fluctuated around 215 for the summer months. I'm now back on the wagon after something in my head just clicked. I'm more determined than ever. I've decided to just track calories and focus on unprocessed foods as much as possible.

NEW UPDATE: I'm running a half marathon in May! So this will also be a blog of a non-runner becoming a long distance MACHINE!

Here are my stats:

Highest weight - 235

10/11/09: 206.6 (-1.8)
10/18/09: 206.8 (+0.2)
10/25/09: 205.8 (-1.0)
11/2/09: 206.2 (+ 0.4 -> That's what I get for eating halloween candy!)

From couch potato to 2 miles!

Last week I ran my first consecutive mile. It was hard. Really hard.

By the Monday I upped it to 1.2 miles consecutive and LOTS more intervals.

Yesterday I got up to 1.4 miles consecutive. Again...LOTS of intervals after that initial run.

Today.....*drumroll*

TWO MILES! ME! The girl who couldn't jog a mile in high school JOGGED TWO MILES!!!

Was it fast? Not really. I ran at an 11 minute mile pace for both miles 1 and 2....in fact we finished mile 1 at 11 minutes and mile 2 at 22 EXACTLY. Ho… Continue

Binge....AVOIDED! Sweet, sweet victory!

Sorry if my workout summaries are so boring. I like being able to write it down and actually see my improvements on paper.....er...screen. :-)

I think I did pretty well today! Got up and hit the gym with Lauren (half marathon partner). We put in 3.4 miles total. Our workout called for 3.0, but we tend to not lump a warm-up or cool down lap in our actual mileage count. I ran 1.4 miles consecutive! And you know what? Aside from my shoes bothering me I think I could have done more! (I need to inve… Continue

By golly I think she likes it!

Today's realizations:

Part 1: BY GOLLY SHE LIKES IT

I was in the shower and running through the mental checklist of things to do tomorrow (why must my to-do list invade my "me" time?) I'm going to the gym at 8 AM tomorrow morning to do the scheduled workout (3 miles and strength training). My thoughts did turn to "ah man, I'd rather sleep," I'd be lying if I didn't say that crossed my mind. But before I could fully process those thoughts my mind jumped to how I want to see if I can pull out a… Continue

Weak start to the day but going for the strong finish!

I woke up and add a less than stellar breakfast. My roommate made amish friendship bread and it is delicious. I had a piece for breakfast. (estimating 300 calories???). I also had a soy latte with it (though to help compensate I left out the shot of peppermint I like and got an iced....120 calories and keeps me full for awhile). My snack was a pita with hummus. Not sure of the calories since it wasn't on the package. Lunch was sushi (4 pieces of nigiri- fish with bit of rice- and a california ro… Continue

Solution to a bad day

So I woke up this morning knowing the day would be long (finishing writing a report that's been nothing but problems. Excel spreadsheets and I are not friends anymore.). I also realized I gained this week....

BUT...

I DIDN'T LET THAT STOP ME!

Instead, I:

- stayed within my calories (bit high on sugar, but nothing unmanageable)

- put in 4.4 miles at the gym

The feeling I have right now is FAR better than any I could have gotten from sitting on the couch with french fries I picked up on my w… Continue

I think you did great. Sushi isn't a bad choice and avocado has healthy fat. Awesome on the working out. It does sound like a shoe problem for sure. Can you get fitted at a running store? I also use Body Glide on my feet and other areas that chafe...

Hi Amanda. Thanks for the comment and in the interest of full disclosure I have to admit that I do the workouts at home so I don't really need to get out the door. Just out the bed. LOL.
