Blog to Lose

No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!

I have been diagnosed with PCOS since my teens, but I'm just now starting to take Metformin. I tried once in my college days, but I didn't stick it out because of the stomach side effects. I'm trying again. My doctor told me that sticking with whole wheat would help with the stomach side effects. I'm hoping it will help with weight loss and cravings, but I'm not sure if I completely understand. Anybody had good results or problems?

I have been off and on with Metformin for a while. I will tell you--even though you don't seem to think it is working. (aka-I haven't lost weight or felt different) it is helping the cysts. I was off for one month due to a conflict with another medication...and my cysts were back and my period was off...when I am taking it, I don't have cyst pain and my cycle is regular. I take mine at bedtime-with no food. My doctor told me that if you take some in the morning it generally makes you hungry all day long...I use to take 500 in the morning and 500 at night. I would feel hungry all day long...Now I just take the 1000 at night and it is much better. I eat lots of whole grains and fruits- and try to eat organic which seems to help. The stomach side effects only last a up to two weeks...make it through that and you will be fine. I haven't lost any weight...but haven't gained really either. I mean...when I make choices to eat a bunch of fatty foods, I feel it, but my RE just said that some people with PCOS have to take other drugs to help with the weightloss. Currently, we are seeking fertility treatments, but if I don't get pregnant in the next month- we will do a 6 month ovary suppression and I will go to an endocrinologist and seek some help with weightloss...because it seems no matter how "good" I eat, or exercise I do- I lose 10lbs and plataeu. It doesn't generally seem worth the work when it is only going to be a 10lb loss.
