I'm a little worried that anyone weighing over 200 lbs would damage joints with anything much more strenuous than walking or swimming. What are your thoughts on this??
I started exercising right from the start at 230lbs walking on the treadmill for 20 min and doing 3 circuits at the gym (same concept as Curves). When i knew i could stick with that after 3 weeks i kicked it up with 2 miles on the treadmill, 1 circuit, and strength training 4 days a week and 50 min of cardio on the 5th day. Currently i am 206lbs and haven't had any aches or pains. I agree that walking is a great start!
It's hard to remember exactly when I joined the gym (I think I was in my size 12s while I was doing Atkins) ... I hired a personal trainer last summer, when I was in the 240s, and worked out with her a couple of times a week.
That got too expensive (unfortunately. I LOVED working with a trainer) but I've been working out really regularly again since January, and I weighed somewhere in the 220s at that point. It was mostly walking on the treadmill at the gym, with some weights work I learned from the trainer thrown in.
I was exercising from the start of this journey. 250lbs on the treadmill or outside walking. I'm just under 200 now and am running - with no joint damage or pain. I really think it depends on the person! That was a great question to ask!
I exercised starting around 230 pounds. That being said, I really amped up the exercise in the past 3 months as I train to walk a half marathon. I'm down to 211.8 (as of this morning) and going strong. Training for a 1/2 marathon is WAY different than "just walking." It's hard on the joints and time consuming, but I like it.
